When discussing the world of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS),the one name that stands out is Linus Torvalds, the creator of Linux. His contribution to technology has shaped the modern digital world and inspired millions of developers across the world.

Linus Benedict Torvalds was born on 28 December 1969 at Helsinki in Finland. From a young age, he showed a deep interest in computers and programming. While studying computer science at the University of Helsinki, he became fascinated by UNIX based operating systems and started experimenting with system development.

In 1991,Torvalds began working on a small personal project to create a free operating system kernel for his computer. What started as a simple experiment soon became Linux, which is one of the most successful open source projects in history.

The biggest strength of Linux was its open source nature. Instead of keeping the project private, Linus invited developers from around the world to contribute, improve and share the software freely. This collaborative approach helped Linux grow rapidly and created a strong global developer community.

Today, Linux powers Web servers, Cloud platforms, Android Smartphone, Supercomputers, Embedded systems and countless modern technologies. Major companies such as Google, IBM, Intel, Red Hat etc. actively support Linux development.

Apart from Linux, Linus Torvalds also created Git, a distributed version control system that is now widely used in software development and open source projects.

Linus Torvalds’s journey proves that innovation can begin with a single idea and a passion for solving problems. His work not only changed the software industry but also strengthened the philosophy of collaboration and knowledge sharing within the FOSS community.

Even today, Linux continues to evolve with contributions from developers worldwide by carrying forward the vision that technology should be open and accessible to everyone.
